winter sick season essentials

A few weeks ago I was hit with a bad dose of the flu/a virus that just didn't want to go away. It knocked me out for the whole week, and even the week after I was still feeling congested and tired.

Which got me thinking about all the things that helped me through this horrible week. If you are struggling at the moment, hopefully some of these remedies help you feel better. I try to keep it as natural as possible when I am sick so haven't put down things like Cold and Flu Tablets, however if these work for you and you are happy to take them, don't hesitate!

  • Vicks Inhaler. I kept this on my bedside table and used it every time I felt stuffy or blocked up. It helps to clear out your sinuses and makes you breathe easier. 
  • Steamer. If you don't have a professional steamer, just put a good heaping of Vicks VapoRub into an ice cream bucket with boiling water. This is what I used to help me sleep at night and I cannot recommend it enough. 
  • H20. It is so important to keep hydrated, especially when you are sick. I drunk so much water to help flush out my system and ensure I didn't get any unwanted headaches. If you struggle to drink cold water when you are sick, make yourself lots of hot teas - lemon and ginger is a favourite of mine. 
  • Soft tissues. Do not underestimate the importance of good quality tissues when you are sick! I like the extra soft eucalyptus ones from Kleenex - the scent is perfect for clearing stuffy noses and the tissues don't feel like sandpaper, even after a week of being sick.
  • Get up and get dressed! This is a simple as it sounds. Just by getting up in the morning, having a shower and getting dressed into comfortable clothes you will feel a hundred times better. I also like to put on a touch of makeup, even if I don't plan to leave the house as I just feel it pulls me together and helps me get out of the slump you can easily fall into when you are lying around sick in bed all day. 
  • Dior Creme De Rose smoothing plumping lip balm. I don't know about you, but my lips get so dry when I am sick and this lovely rose scented lip balm by Dior helps to get them hydrated. It's always nice to add a touch of luxury into your day, even when you are under the weather. 
  • Eat the rainbow. Salad, steamed veggies and fruit should be your best friend when you are battling the flu. I know sometimes eating is the last thing you feel like doing, but making sure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals is so important and eating healthily is the best way to do this. Make yourself a veggie pizza on thin pita bread or get a loved one to whip up a big batch of chicken and vegetable soup for you - your body will thank you for it later!
  • Be as productive as you can be. I know all you feel like doing is lying in bed, but get up for half an hour and tidy the house. Walk around the block. Or head to the grocery store to pick up some healthy food. Just by moving a bit and being up and about your body will start to pick itself up and recover.
