oh baby

It brings me such joy today to finally announce that we are expecting a beautiful baby, due mid January!

My husband and I have been together for nearly nine years so we have had plenty of time to grow together as a couple and experience all the things that most newlywed couples would experience in those first years of marriage. We both knew we were ready to start trying for a baby straight away and we feel so blessed that we fell pregnant almost immediately.

Our little miracle is due just one week before our first wedding anniversary, so (as long as baby isn't late) we will be entering our second year of marriage with a gorgeous new baby - as a family of three.

The first three months of pregnancy for me have really dragged on, although I am lucky that I haven't had bad morning sickness - just a few small bouts of nausea here and there. I want to keep track of this pregnancy with weekly updates so thought I would start my first update below, at 12 weeks pregnant!

How far along? 12 weeks - we had a dating scan at 6 weeks pregnant and our 12 week ultrasound showed our baby is measuring perfectly in size so pretty sure this is accurate.

Size of baby: The size of a large plum (7cm)

Maternity clothes? I've only purchased one pair of maternity jeans so far but I feel like my stomach has just popped over night so I need to head to the shops this weekend and pick up another pair of jeans, a few tops and some work-appropriate clothing!

Stretch marks? Not yet - I have been moisturising regularly and just purchased an anti-stretch mark tummy butter so hopefully this helps me avoid the dreaded stretch marks!

Sleep: Nine times out of ten I am asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.

Best moment this week: Listening to our gorgeous bubba's heartbeat at our 12 week ultrasound and seeing its cute little fingers, feet, nose and chin! Hearing their heartbeat for the first time was so precious - a moment I will never forget.

Miss anything? I miss sleeping on my stomach - prior to getting pregnant I would always sleep on my stomach so it's really hard to get out of that habit. I purchased a pregnancy body pillow, but it's so bulky and my husband complains every time I use it.

Movement: Not yet, although baby was moving like crazy during our 12 week ultrasound check up. He/she flipped around three times and was bouncing up and down all over the place during the scan.

Food cravings: Potatoes - I think I am just craving anything starchy and easy on the stomach at the moment. My nausea has actually gotten worse recently so I have been eating less and a lot plainer. Also craving fresh icy cold fruit and sour lollies - definitely have to kick that craving!

Anything making you queasy or sick: Meat - a few weeks ago I almost threw up while I was cooking meatballs for my husband. I have been completely avoiding meat and instead opting for veggies, carbs and fish.

Gender: I say boy but my husband/mum/dad/sisters all say girl!

Labor signs: No, much too early thankfully.

Symptoms: I feel like my energy might be slowly starting to come back. During the first trimester I was completely wiped of energy most days and would almost be falling asleep at my desk by 10am in the morning! It was so hard to focus and keep my energy levels up at work, and by the time I got home from work all I wanted to do was go to bed and sleep the whole way through the night. Thankfully I have an amazing husband who helped with the cooking and cleaning and held the fort while baby stole all it's mama's energy! Also feel nauseous here and there - although on the whole I have been lucky and have avoided any serious morning sickness. Starting to feel my stomach stretching - I think it's called round ligament pain and it almost feels like my joints are all starting to pull apart.

Belly button in or out? In!

Wedding rings on or off? On.

Happy or moody most of the time: Definitely happy and grateful to be pregnant and have made it through the first trimester relatively easily.

Looking forward to: Our doctor's appointment next week. It's always a highlight seeing our beautiful baby inside my tummy!

Nursery: I have a rough idea of what I want to do but haven't had a chance to start shopping for all the little bits and pieces! I know the next six months will fly by so would love to get started on this soon.

Workouts: I have been continuing with my regular pilates classes, although now I am in my second trimester I will only be able to go to certain classes and can definitely feel some limitations with my ab movements. I really enjoy keeping up with pilates though - so hopefully I can continue going to classes right up until the end! I'd also like to start walking more on the weekend, I find it really therapeutic and the fresh area is also good for me and the baby.
